- Roland Fantom-06 Synthesizer
Roland Fantom-06 Synthesizer
Descrizione
As software becomes more and more integrated in studios, hardware starts to lose its purpose. From that perspective, Roland have been outfitting gear with their self-developed ZEN-CORE engine for years. When it comes to parameters and nuance, this extensive sound-generator plays on the same level as the best virtual instruments on the market, which is great for keyboardists who want a solid stage-synth under their fingertips instead of a cumbersome, and less performance-friendly laptop. It all comes down to feel, and that's why hardware-synths still have a right to exist. Fitted with a small army of buttons, sliders, encoders and other bells and whistles, and blessed with the superior performance of the ZEN-Core engine, the new Roland Fantom-06 offers the combined potential of excellent hardware and exceptional software.
The Roland Fantom-06
In addition to that small army of controls, the Fantom-06 features a 5.5" touch display (1280x720) which offers an immediately accessible graphic interface. In terms of sound, the extensive ZEN Core engine supplies a total of 256 oscillators/voices that you can virtually anything with. Build fat stacks of up to eight oscillators per voice, or stick to a single oscillator to gain more range - and of course - do everything in between. Expansions are available to download via the Roland cloud to expand the potential even further, and since you're getting multiple SuperNATURAL engines, the sound is as realistic as could be.
Other Highlights
Roland have also built-in two gigabytes of storage capacity to support custom samples which can then be triggered by the keyboard or the performance pads. Meanwhile, a built-in MIDI-compatible audio interface of supports a smooth link-up with your computer, and there's a multi-track pattern sequencer you can use to create grooves. On top of all of that, the Fantom-06 comes with a gigantic stack of effects, plus a vocoder you can use with a line microphone to brilliantly bizarre effect. Add it all up and it's safe to say this synth will take a fair amount of time to get to know in depth - as it should.

After sometime in usage: This is the synthesiser I was waiting for long time. This has a decent piano emulation as well as a wheel tone organ one. Then, one gets the ZEN synthesis that will take us all the way back to Roland 80's, 90's and 2000,s sounds while standing its ground in the modern music too. A huge collection of sounds (+3000) plus the Super Natural Acoustic Emulations. Also a VA synthesis, a sampler and a huge responsive display taking into account the compact size of this beast. All packet within good quality standards into a very light board ready for gigging. Yet when as of me, one could be near or in his 60's no wanting to hurt his back when moving around with his materials. The package is completed with a bunch of workstation capabilities and a small but convenient memory for extensions, additional sound ware and models. That recalls me the expansion boards of the previous Roland synths. They are all available to download for free from Roland Cloud. To end with the model expansions that are intended to access the ZEN technology as if one was manipulating the actual emulated machine. Juno 106 or Jupiter 8 to mention just two from the available collection. They are a bit priced, but if one doesn't know how to program those sounds on the ZEN synthesis, this investment will be rewarded. These models are not adding any samples along with. Just a programming plugin I would call it.
Roland R&D has done a very good job with the OS. The learning curve is quite straight forward without big slopes to climb. Anyone who has ever used a workstation and or a synthesiser of the past with very little displays and deep menu diving OS implementation, will find a breath while working with any of the Roland Fantom Series machines. Not only the touch screen, but a bunch of shortcuts and dedicated buttons too.
My choice was the 61 keys model because in my studio I use an 88 fully weighted midi controller as my master piece. Still I have a very portable machine that I can take with easy to everywhere, this wonderful Roland Fantom 06. So the best of the two worlds. While playing organ & leads, the 61 synth keys are just gorgeous. While playing Solo Piano (what only seriously happens while in my studio) the 88 weighted controller makes the trick and the responsiveness of the Roland Fantom to the key strokes of my controller via Midi is just as I was playing directly on a Fantom 08. Besides Fantom software will replicate the MIDI IN data through the USB into my PC. That's possible to be configured and even Fantom-0 to listen to all midi data as it came just from a single midi channel, which is very convenient for using the multitimbral scenes from a master keyboard and still mirroring only the midi channels one wishes to the PC via the Fantom-0 USB port. Not to forget that we get 8 sliders, 8 knobs with three possible functions each (one of them user assignable) two wheels that can be assigned. The typical Roland Joystick and two assignable buttons, two switch pedal slots and a CC pedal input.
A vocoder and microphone processing is to be remarkable.
I have tried the Ableton Live DAW implementation and I must say Bravo Roland!
Only one or small two disappointments: I would have loved the 2GB of pad sample memory to be shared with the 256 MB of keyboard sample memory. And after touch capability as well. But we cannot have everything at this price point.
Thus I recommend this board and the whole Fantom series depending on your needs and budget. You will find 6 boards to choose from all ready to rock.
Bax-shop was specially kind and helpful to me, but these details are not part of this review. Just worth to mention that Bax-shop rocks!
First to say that Baxshop was very helpful as usually. That the parcel was very well packed and it was shipped in few hours. Prima! Then, Boost kept it for 24 hours. But still this arrived quickly to home.
About Roland. They have made a good job. But I will remove one star to be honest.
In 2024, 256 MB of sample memory is ridiculous. That said. The Fantom 0 series are very powerful pseudo workstations. With an update including a full linear sequencer, this became a true workstation.
As a synthesiser and scene performance machine, this is the field where the Fantom 0 shines. Easy to carry and powerful tools to performe, coupled with a very good and extended sound palette that will take you from the old Roland times to the newest and cover signature sound from other known brands at the same time.
Last thing to say. Roland, please, if there is more no used memory inside, please free it for sampling. Otherwise, I recommend this keyboard. And you will not go wrong with Baxshop. They rock!
Dan the good stuff:
